Owner-safe troubleshooting guide

Respond after an impact

Follow Yamaha's emergency response after the outboard strikes a submerged or floating object.

Before you begin

Bring the boat under control and account for surrounding traffic, water and vessel conditions.

Safety

Impact damage can make the outboard unsafe to operate. Do not attempt structural, propeller, shaft, mounting or steering repair in this guide.

Steps

  1. Stop the engine after the outboard strikes an object.

  2. From a safe position, check operation and visible component damage and inspect the boat for damage.

Safety: Do not dismantle, straighten or repair damaged components.

Stop: Do not continue if safe control is uncertain, serious damage is visible or fluids are leaking.

  3. Only if the boat remains safe and controllable, return slowly and with great care to the nearest port.

Safety: Impact damage can make the outboard unsafe to operate.

Stop: Obtain assistance instead if slow return cannot be made safely.

  4. Have a Yamaha dealer inspect the outboard before it is used again.

When to stop

Do not continue if safe control is uncertain, serious damage is visible, fluids are leaking or the boat itself may be unsafe.
