Owner-recognizable problem

Starter motor does not operate

The starter motor does not turn when a start is attempted. Battery, connection, fuse, control-position or starter-motor conditions are possible; this is not a single diagnosis.

Possible causes

Causes are model-specific possibilities, not confirmed diagnoses. Use only the group for your model.

Yamaha F150A

  • Blown fuse: A blown electrical-system fuse is one possible reason the starter motor does not operate.
  • Control not in neutral: A remote-control lever or shift position outside neutral can prevent starter operation.
  • Loose or corroded battery terminals: Loose or corroded battery-terminal connections are one possible reason the starter motor does not operate.
  • Starter-motor fault: A starter-motor fault is one possible reason the starter motor does not operate and requires qualified diagnosis.
  • Weak or incorrect battery: A discharged, damaged or incorrectly specified battery is one possible reason the starter motor does not operate.

What to check next

  • Check starter-system basics — Check the neutral position and visible battery, terminal and fuse context when the starter motor does not operate, without electrical diagnosis or repair.
