Owner-safe troubleshooting guide
Respond safely to a Yamaha overheat warning
Stop operation and perform the limited owner-visible checks documented by Yamaha.
Before you begin
Bring the boat under control in a safe location and stop the engine before inspecting the outboard.
Safety
Do not continue operating with the overheat warning active. Keep clear of moving parts and do not dismantle the cooling system.
Steps
Bring the boat under control and stop the engine safely.
Safety: Do not continue normal operation with the warning active.
Confirm that the cooling-water inlet is in the water and that the trim angle has not lifted it clear.
Safety: Keep the engine stopped during inspection.
Stop: Stop if the inlet cannot be inspected safely.
Inspect the external cooling-water inlet for visible blockage.
Safety: Do not dismantle components or reach near moving parts.
Stop: Stop if no owner-safe correction is obvious.
If the warning condition continues or the cause cannot be corrected, leave the engine stopped and contact a Yamaha dealer.
Stop: Do not resume normal operation while the warning remains active.
When to stop
Stop the check if safe access is not possible, the inlet is not visibly inspectable, or the warning remains active.
Professional help
If the cause cannot be found and corrected, or the warning continues, have a Yamaha dealer inspect the outboard.
