Owner-recognizable problem

Engine cranks but will not start

The starter turns the engine, but the engine does not begin running. Several fuel-supply or starting-setup conditions are possible; this is not a single diagnosis.

Possible causes

Causes are model-specific possibilities, not confirmed diagnoses. Use only the group for your model.

  • Incorrect starting setup: An incorrect fuel-supply or starting setup, including an absent engine-shutoff lock plate, can prevent starting.
  • Insufficient fuel: The available fuel supply may be insufficient for starting or continued operation.
  • Restricted fuel filter: A restricted fuel filter can limit fuel delivery and is one possible contributor to several running problems.
  • Stale or contaminated fuel: Fuel that is old or contaminated is one possible contributor to starting, idle or power problems.
